- Special features of this score: Lachner composed this string quintet in Vienna in April 1834 for string quartet and double bass. In 1866, before submitting it to his publisher, he completely revised the score and replaced the double bass with a second cello. The Walter Wollenweber publishing house is the only one to publish the version with double bass. When it was published, the idea was to offer the original version of this string quintet for the first time. However, it should be noted that in this version, Lachner’s revisions have been retained, notably the addition of contrapuntal elements to replace certain octave passages in the cello and double bass. The version we offer here, the original with double bass, is based on the Walter Wollenweber edition, to which we have made a few changes in order to remain as faithful as possible to the manuscript.
