- Special features of this score: Like many of Bottesini’s shorter virtuoso works, the Allegretto capriccio doesn’t have a precisely documented composition date, but musicologists generally place it in his late creative period, when he was writing highly refined concert pieces for his own performances. It sits squarely in the late Romantic virtuoso tradition, but with a lighter, almost playful spirit compared to Bottesini’s larger works. Three main characteristics of this piece: “Capriccio” character: whimsical, flexible, slightly unpredictable; Elegant rather than dramatic: more charm than weight; Operatic lyricism: very much influenced by Italian bel canto (think Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini). Moreover, you can hear how Giovanni Bottesini treats the double bass almost like a tenor voice—singing, ornamented, and expressive. Note: Includes two piano parts, one for orchestra tuning and one for solo tuning.
